When a group of people working on some of the biggest games in the first-person shooting genre gathered for a roundtable hosted by our own Evan Lahti at GDC, the subject of rookie retention came up. The most popular shooters today are competitive—with extraction shooters and battles of the royale variety maintaining their dominance—so is it an issue that the first experience many players have is getting demolished by veterans?
David Fifield, general manager for the Hunt franchise at Crytek, called this “the brick of getting in”, making it sound appropriately like a heavy blunt object just waiting to fall on the heads of fresh meat playing their first games of Hunt: Showdown.
“We have an achievement in Hunt called Debut,” Fifield said. “It’s ‘kill your first enemy Hunter’, 40% of our players never get it. We’re a PvP game where you come in, you do some things, and 40% of the people trying Hunt have never killed another player.”
Hunt: Showdown is a …
Professor Demis Hassabis, a co-founder of DeepMind who began his programming career working for Bullfrog and Lionhead, has been awarded the Nobel Prize for Chemistry, alongside Professor John Jumper and Professor David Baker. Hassabis and Jumper’s share of the award is for their “complete revolution” in the prediction of protein structures through the AI tool AlphaFold2.
AlphaFold first became available to researchers in 2018, and 2020’s AlphaFold2 is the second iteration (the third, AlphaFold3, was announced in May this year). It is an AI dedicated to predicting protein structures, created by DeepMind, which has now been used to predict the structure of almost all known proteins, a feat unimaginable a mere decade ago, as well as create new proteins by David Baker and his researchers.
Per the Nobel citation, Professor Baker receives half of the Nobel “for computational protein design”, while the other half is shared jointly between Professor Hassabis and Profess…
Armored Core 6 is a throwback to a type of game FromSoftware hasn’t made for 10 years: a fast-paced, mission-based mech action game full of laser cannons and massive missile barrages. It feels very much like classic Armored Core, with one exception: it’s on PC. At a recent preview event I played a PC build of the game and scoped out the graphics options, which included another first for a FromSoftware game: a 120 fps option.
Armored Core 6’s PC settings are on the whole fairly standard, with a decent but unsurprising selection of dials to tweak. It includes the basic options like borderless windowed mode, togglable V-Sync, and a range of quality settings. But where all of FromSoftware’s previous PC games have topped out at a locked 60 fps, Armored Core 6 offers 30, 60, 90 and 120 fps options.
Under the detailed quality settings menu there are a few welcome options, including being able to disable motion blur (which I did immediately, as is just and proper). There’s…
